Product Information

A Boer War MLE (Magazine Lee Enfield) MKI* carbine. Manufactured by Enfield in 1900 it is chambered in .303. This lovely carbine still retains many original features including the rare bolt dust cover and peep hole volley sight. The brass stock plate is regimentally marked and has at some stage later been crossed. This is a very good indication that it was issued and then re issued again. The stock is also regimentally marked 5 over 1898 ( 5 being the 5th Regiment). Just below is the Enfield roundal with a 1 underneath. The 1 signifies it was a "first class" weapon. Next to this is the "sold of service" stamps. It bears the Union of South Africa ownership stamp on the receiver - letter U with a Broad arrow within. The initials C G with broad arrow stands for "Cape Government, South Africa" . It also has some unusual features to. There is no provision for a bayonet or cleaning rod. The sling hoods have been removed with rear one plugged with wooden dowel. This would indicate that it was used by mounted troops or cavalry units. These modifications would make it far easier to holster whilst on horse back and with less chance of snagging whilst doing so. A very interesting carbine. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
