This is a Portuguese Mauser Vergueiro bolt action rifle. They are unique to Portugal and were designed by a Portuguese army officer. All the rifles were made by DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) and were manufactured to a very high quality with around 100,000 made for the Portuguese military. During their service life these rifles were used by the Portuguese Army whilst fighting in the East Africa against the Germans during the First World War. This example still retains many matching parts and has a lovely wood work. The receiver bears the royal crest of King Carlos. The rifle comes fitted with an original period leather sling and cleaning rod.
