An early production pre First World War, SMLE MKIII by Enfield, dated 1912. From 1907 to 1912 RSAF Enfield only manufactured 100,000 MKIIIs. That's less than 17,000 a year! This rifle would have almost certainly seen active service during the Great War. Those that did survive were first to see action again in WWII. After being retired from service this SMLE was in private ownership. The roundal reads H.Kirkman. Scunthorpe. This may well have been Mr Kirkman's service rifle whilst in military service. Servicemen could privately purchased their weapons. A very interesting SMLE with lots of history. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
