An Enfield SMLE MKIII* dated 1918. Unlike any other example we have seen, this one has a large capital N stamped on the underside of the main wood work. This is most likely a British Navy property marking. It is also fitted with a blue/grey Navy sling. The SMLE or Short Magazine Lee Enfield is synonyms with the British soldier during the First World War. It is still considered by many to be best military bolt action rifle ever made. Those that survived the Great War were among the first to see action again during WWII. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
