Product Information

This is a rare 1917 dated S.S.A. manufactured WWI SMLE MKIII* .303 rifle. Standard Small Arms (S.S.A.) was a company founded during the First World War. Its primary aim was to supply complete rifles, namely SMLE's to the British Government's War Department to supplement the output of Enfield , BSA and LSA. However, the company never achieved its goal of producing large numbers of rifles and only managed to make around 200,000 in total during WWI. A tiny amount in rifle terms. The butt strap band was not stamped with a makers name, just a Crown over GR with the year of manufacture and model. The initials SSA were stamped on the left rear of the receiver.

This example was issued again during WWII. The initials FTR - Factory Through Repair, indicate that it was reworked at either the Enfield or BSA factories. The barrel carries the armorers and date stamps of 1944 (44) and it has had a replacement rear sight, again numbered to the rifle. A WWII bolt has also been fitted. And finally the black military Suncorite painted finish, this was only used during WWII as a quick and effective way of protecting metal parts.

A rare SMLE that has not only seen active service during the Great War but was also put back into service for WWII.

A must have for the SMLE or WWI & WWII collector! Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
