Product Information

This is a rare Colt 1911 - Transitional model. On June 12, 1923, Colt was awarded the contract to manufacture 10,000 "Improved Automatic Pistols", which became the first 1911A1 . These pistols were numbered from serial number 700001 to 710000. The modifications that were made were as follows, tang grip safety extended, clearance cut made on receiver, mainspring housing knurled and raised, face of trigger knurled and cut back and width of front sight increased. This example is number 704149 and dates to 1924 production. An unusual feature is the name Hammerli Tiengen stamped on the right side of the frame. This is the factory that Hammerli of Switzerland had in Tiengen Germany for reasons of circumventing Swiss laws on weapons sales. The gun also has the Ulm proof house stamps and date code "IH", indicating that it was proofed in 1986. A rare and well traveled Colt 1911. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
