Product Information

An original First World War German army S98/05 S Butcher - Saw Back bayonet with metal scabbard and a rare leather frog. The maker is Deutsche MaschinenFabrik A-G Duisberg and is dated 1916. The pommel and cross guard are stamped with the Imperial German army acceptance mark as is the throat of the scabbard.  The leather frog is also another rare feature, very few now exist. The base of the steel scabbard has suffered what can only be a shrapnel strike or possible a bullet ricochet. All parts are original and in untouched condition. The saw teeth are still sharp.

The Saw Back bladed Butcher bayonet was designated as the S98/05 S or m.S. (mit Säge – with saw). During World War One, the Sawback got the reputation for being an extremely dangerous weapon that could cause severe injury.  Through an allied propaganda campaign designed to make the blade seem inhumane, the Germans decided to remove the saw teeth and suspended production in 1917. Soldiers that were captured with a Sawback bayonets were often harshly treated, and this along gave good reason to grind the teeth off.
