This is a WWI British No5 MKI Mills Fragmentation Grenade. The brass base cap is dated January 1916 (1/16), the makers initials are CAV. -  C.A.Vandervell & Co Warple Way, Acton Vale, London W3 . These grenades are most commonly referred to as a Mills Bomb. A rare early example it is complete with all internal parts including spring and plunger.
