Product Information

A rare pre WWI Imperial German Navy C/97.98 marked 3,7cm Maxim Automatic cannon round. The base of the brass shell is marked with the makers name "Karlsruhe" with the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy) arsenal's acceptance stamp - Crown over M. It is dated 1904 . The capital letter I denotes January as the month. The numbers 111 refer to the lot number. The brass fuse was made by DWM - Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken and the projectile is Navy marked. It is very unusual to find such a complete and in tact German Naval shell. These rounds were fired from naval Maxim automatic deck guns used on heavy cruisers and battleships, and were used as standard close quarters defence weapons. Very few now survive as the majority of the German naval fleet was either destroyed or scuttled during WWI.
