This is a rare WWI Barbed Wire Destruction Devise. This simple but effective devise was used to blow up German defenses, most commonly barbed wire before an assault or offensive. Invented by the French at the beginning of the war it is a clever adaption of the hand grenade. The "3.7" stamped into the wood refers to the fuse time.
