Product Information

This EB44 is the rarest of the German plain bladed S98/05 type Ersatz bayonets from WWI. The handle is made from pressed steel parts that are riveted together and the spine of the blade bears the imperial German army acceptance stamp. This bayonet along is rare but to find an example with its correct scabbard and a period leather frog is very rare indeed. The scabbard was constructed in a similar fashion to the bayonet handle being made from press steel. Ersatz bayonets were first introduced at the beginning of WWI. The German army soon realised that there was insufficient equipment, including bayonets and quickly introduced the "substitute" or "Ersatz" weapons to cope with the demand. These weapons were intended to be quicker and easier to manufacture whilst the standard weapon producer ramped up output.
