Product Information

This is a very rare WWII German First Class Iron Cross in its box and with its Nazi document/certificate naming who it was issued to. First Class Iron crosses were issued to soldiers for acts of bravery. The soldiers name on the document is Max Scherer of the 3. /Pz.Aufkl.Abt.17 = 17th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion. This battalion was part of the 17th SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Götz von Berlichingen", who saw extensive service in France and Germany during 1944 fighting against the advancing Allied forces, eventually surrendering to US Army near Achensee, Bavaria in May of 1945.

Of considerable interest; On the 14th June 1944, the French town of Carentan fell to the US 101st Airborne Division of which Easy Company was part of, as the 17. SS moved into defensive positions to the South. After a counter attack by the German 17th SS, Carentan was eventually taken by the US.

The makers code 113 indicates it was made by Hermann Aurich, Dresden.

The honour title, "Götz von Berlichingen" was bestowed by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler.
