Product Information

A WWI German Army S98/05 S Butcher - Saw Back bayonet with metal scabbard. Dated 1916 with imperial German army acceptance stamps. It was manufactured by Deutshe Maschirenfabrik A.G. Duisburg. Unlike the vast majority of scabbards this one is maker marked "Waffenfabrik Mauser A.G. Oberndorf " .

The Saw Back bladed Butcher bayonet was designated as the S98/05 S or m.S. (mit Säge – with saw). During World War One, the Sawback got the reputation for being an extremely dangerous weapon that could cause severe injury.  Through an allied propaganda campaign designed to make the blade seem inhumane, the Germans decided to remove the saw teeth and suspended production in 1917. Soldiers that were captured with a Sawback bayonets were often harshly treated, and this along gave good reason to grind the teeth off.
