This is a superb WWI German Gew 98 rifle Model 1898/05 "Butcher" Bayonet and metal scabbard. This is the second pattern model 1898/05 bayonet, with the flash guard along the back of its grips. This was introduced in 1915, known as the S 98/05 nA ("Seitengewehr 98/05 neuer Art," or, Bayonet ‘98/’05 new Pattern) . A lovely example that was manufactured by Mauser in 1916 with the correct Imperial acceptance markings that can be found on the bayonets pommel throat of the scabbard. The blade is still in great condition. The scabbard has what looks to be a shrapnel impact half way down its length.
