This is a rare Webley MK1 .455 Revolver that was issued to the 74th Battery (The Battle Axe Company) of the Royal Artillery. Only 40,000 Mark 1's were produced until the model was discontinued in 1894, with the highest known serial number being 41,349. This example is number 38,736. Only 35,000 were made for the military contract and bear the WD - War Dept and broad acceptance stamps. This revolver is one of those guns and is regimantally marked "74 R.A. 57" = 74th Battery, Royal Artillery, weapon number 57. The 74th Royal Artillery, nicknamed The Battle Axe Company, was raised at Kilkenny, Ireland in 1801 from the men of the disbanded Royal Irish Artillery. They saw active service in the American War and the West Indies in 1800s and during both world wars. They saw extensive service during WW2 most famously helping with the releive of Tobruk. The regiment still exists today.
The revolver retains its factory matching numbers to frame, barrel and cylinders and is fitted with the correct grips and lanyard ring.
