Product Information

An unusual WWI French Berthier Mle M16 carbine. Under the wood work on the barrel it is dated 1918 with the makers initials MAC (Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault) . The wood work and forward barrel band have been taken from a rifle, most likely a Lebel, and has been retrofit to accommodate this carbine. In 1918 the French army still had a shortage of serviceable weapons due to the huge loses of men and equipment. Armorers would often use whatever was available to make useable weapons. Note the over stamping of the new numbers on the trigger guard. The code on the magazine floor plate (HVT Co) is Établissements Vibert-Truchon & Cie: boîtier de protection, who were a subcontractor for Mle parts from 1916 onwards. A great looking and very interesting little carbine. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
