Product Information

An original Enfield Martini Henry 1881 Artillery Carbine. Originally manufactured in 1881 by Enfield,  then in 1897 it was converted by HRB. Co (Henry Rifles Barrel, Engineering and Small Arms Company Ltd.) to .303 from .577/450 and marked ME 303 AC1 (Martin-Enfield .303 Artillery Carbine MKI). The markings on the stock make for interesting reading. The original regiment stamps are 7 over 189, 7 being the regiment and 189 the rack number. The brass disc system was introduced in 1881 and reads 7. 11. 4.S. STF. 686 - July 1911, 4th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, weapon no 686. The roundal is HRB with two marks below indicating a MKI and a first class weapon. There are also other faint markings just above the brass disc. Eventually this carbine was retired from service and marked with the initials ->CC<- meaning "sale to county Cadet Corps" and marked "NOT FOR BALL" on the receiver. Live military weapons were sold to and used by Cadets schools to train with and this marking would indicate that it was not to be shot with live ammunition. The name in the wood work looks to be "Cobb". A very well traveled carbine with lots of history. Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
