This is a rare Fencing Musket, circa early 1900. The makers mark is H&G, we are unable to establish who they were. The British Government are known to have contracted many smaller companies to produce these muskets. The design and build of this one is unlike most others of this period. It is very well made with intricate chequering to the metal work and more unusual a trigger guard. The plunger at the end is sprung loaded and retracts when pushed. It was deemed safer to train with this and avoid accidental injury from a real bayonet. The overall dimensions represent that of a WWI SMLE with bayonet fitted, the standard issued rifle of the day. They were used to train new recruits before and during WWI.
