This is a WWII Carcano M1938/43 short rifle chambered in German 7.9mm. Although referred to as a rifle it shares more similarities with a carbine. The barrel length measures only around 18 inches and being chambered in German, Mauser 7.92mm it must have one hell of a kick!! The M-1938/43 is an M-1938 Short Rifle modified to fire German 7.9mm Mauser ammunition. The cailbre was stamped forward of the rear sights and the receiver modified to allow the longer 7.9 cartridge to clear as it was extracted. They were issued to Italian and Nazi troops, and latter on in the war to the Volkssturm. Deactivated with a working action.
