WWII Nambu Type 14 pistol "First series" model. The type 14 was designed by Japanese general Kijiro Nambu in 1925 (14th year of the Taisho emperor, hence the official designation). It was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army and used widely throughout the Second World War, and was the standard issue Army sidearm. This example is an early "first series" . Serial numbers started at 50000 and finished at 99999 before a letter suffix was added. The serial number of this pistol 53896 meaning it is only number 3,896th. The first symbol in front of this number is the Nagoya Arsenal mark. Next to it is the Japanese Katakana (phonetic) symbal in a circle. Below is the month and year of manufacture; 17.8 which translates to August 1942. On the other side of the slide are the four characters for the model designation, they are ju-yon-nen-shiki , meaning type 14.  August 1942 also saw one of the first major offensive by Allied troops against Japanese forces. United States Marines, landed on the islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Florida in the Solomon Islands. These islands were vital and strategic for communications and later for Allied bombing. Deactivated with a working action, can be cocked, stripped and dry fired .
