Product Information

This is an extremely rare, completely original First World War German Gew98 sniper rifle. Dated 1915, the very first year that Germany started production of this rifle in sniper form. It has a distinctive drop-down bolt lever and cut out in the wood work to accommodate. Every single number matches on every single part!! Manufactured by Spandau in 1915, this is one of the rifles from the very first batches produced that year. Only around 18,000 or so were ever made. The scope mounts have remained in tact from the day they were fitted. The disc with the regimental markings is still present, but the markings are no longer visible. This rifle was only recently discovered and still had the original leather sling attached, though the leather had perished around the sling hoop joints. The sling will be supplied with the rifle. Minus its scope which was most likely removed when it was brought back as a war trophy, but more importantly the original factory fitted mounts remain. A very rare original rifle indeed, you are unlikely to find another in such complete and original condition.  Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.

Also of interest, note the serial 2986 doesn't carry a letter prefix, meaning this rifle was number two thousand, nine hundred and eighty sixth off the production line. During production German rifles were made in batches using blocks of serial numbers, once completed the next batch would start from 1 again followed by a letter prefix, for example 1 to 10000, then 1a to 10000a and so on.
