Product Information

A very interesting, matching numbers, First World War dated SMLE MKIII* rifle. Originally manufactured by BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) for the Great War effort. In 1915 BSA only produced 275,927 combined MKIII & MKIII* rifles. This example is somewhat unusual as it does not have the magazine cut-off provision. This was omitted from the design a year later in 1916. It has its matched barrel dated 1915 with Broad Arrow acceptance stamps, however it has clearly been armorer reworked with the bolt and rear sight being renumbered to the rifles serial number (Y50993). This was most likely done when it returned from action and required repair, or as part of emergency measures whereby all available and serviceable weapons were quickly brought into service to help supplement the huge shortage of rifles (a measure that was implemented during both world wars).Note the armorers repair to the wood work below the action on the right hand side. Another good indication on service use. Incredible all visible numbers are still matched including the nose cap and even the magazine. This one also has a rather unusual emblem in the stock. What looks to be a cross made from metal studs or nails along with other markings possibly initials. This one would have almost certainly soldiered on during WWII. This lovely historic rifle is current live and can be owned live on an FAC with the correct variation. The bore is in good condition.
