Product Information

An original Smith & Wesson revolver chambered in .44 Russian or its correct name .44 Double Action, First Model.  Now becoming increasingly hard to find. These very desirable US made revolvers are beautifully crafted. First introduced in 1870. The name came about when Russia’s military attaché to their U.S. embassy, General Gorloff, encountered this new S&W revolver and was impressed but didn't like it in its then calibre of .44/100. The Russian Government offered Smith & Wesson an order for 20,000 revolvers but only if they were chambered for a .44 calibre cartridge of their own design. Naturally Smith & Wesson agreed, and the .44 Russian went into production. This model was first produced in 1881 with production finally finishing in 1913. Serial numbers ran from 1 in 1881 to 54668 until 1913 with only a total of 53,590 produced. The serial number of this example is 28,669 and dates to around late 1890s early 1900s.

Of interest, Jesse James himself was killed in 1882 by Bob Ford with an S&W New Model .It is documented that the S&W .44 Russian revolvers were seen in the hands of Japanese officers on Guadal canal early in 1943.

This lovely original revolver is chambered in an obsolete calibre and can therefore be owned live without any form of license. It has a full working action and can be cocked, stripped and dry fired. ******RESERVED*************RESERVED*************RESERVED*************RESERVED*******
