This is a pair pre WWII Browning High Power wooden grips. The red paint was applied to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture and rusting the frame. This practice was phased out during WWII but started again for a short period in the late 1940s. One of these grips is marked 42,  possible a German date stamp for 1942?
