Product Information

A very rare early production 1907 Pattern Hook Quillon SMLE rifle bayonet with scabbard. Originally manufactured in November 1909 (11'09) it would have left the Sanderson Bros. & Newbold factory with its distinctive "hooked quillon" cross guard. This design feature was only in production for a few years. The hooked quillon bayonet was intended to allow the soldiers using it to catch an opponent’s bayonet and disarm him. The idea was soon dropped in the face of the coming first world war and to speed up production the hooks were ordered to be ground off all issue bayonets. You can clearly see when put along side a later example the taller and distinctive cross guard shade (hook quillon bayonet on the right). Also the cut or grinding marks made when it was removed. The blade is correctly marked with the "Crown" over "E.R." for King Edward the Seventh (1901-1910) and manufacture "Sanderson" below. On the reverse is the acceptance, broad arrow and bend markings. The cross guard is marked "V 2801"  and pommel with number 6 or 9 and the sold out service stamp (broad arrows facing each other). The stiff leather scabbard is also broad arrow stamp with inspectors markings and the makers initials W, then A.A.Ltd. Of considerable interest, one of the earliest known examples is date October 1908.
