Product Information

This is a William Tranter 3rd model percussion 5 shot revolver, chambered in .442 (54 bore). Tranter's 3rd model percussion revolver was the first of his percussion models to be built upon the improved, raked frame. Unlike the 2nd model, the rammer and lever were in a two-piece assemble, with the rammer pivoting on the lever arm. This model features a distinctive double trigger mechanism. It consisted of two levers, the actual trigger and a longer lever which projected from the trigger. Pressure on the latter with the middle finger turns the cylinder, which was then secured in position, and also cocks the hammer. The trigger inside the trigger guard can then be pulled with the first finger to release the hammer and fire the revolver. He patented this double trigger mechanism and lever loading system in 1853. The serial number of this example dates to around the mid to late 1850s.

3rd Model Tranter revolvers were popular amongst officers of the US Confederate Army. The most famous user of a Tranter revolver was Civil War Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart who died at the Battle of Yellow Tavern. They were also a popular choice for private purchase by a British officers as their personal sidearm.

The action is in good working order. This rare and historic revolver is of an obsolete calibre and can therefore be owned live without any form of license. It can be fully stripped, cock and dry fired. The rifling in the barrel is in excellent condition.
