Product Information

A First World War French military issued Mle 1892 Berthier Cavalry Carbine dated 1917. It was manufactured by Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Chtellerault (MAC) and has all matching numbers. This little carbine bears no fewer than six separate armorer repairs to the woodwork. It's safe to say that it certainly saw action during the Great War. In the 1930s it was upgraded to fire the more modern ammunition and marked with the letter N on the receiver ring and barrel, but unlike the majority did not receive the magazine modification, whereby the capacity was increased from 3 to 5 rounds. During WWII it was captured by the Nazis and issued to the German Airforce (Luftwaffe). The initials "LK5" on the stock are believed to mean "Luftgau Kommando 5", a Luftwaffe command put together in late 1944 from the remnants of Luftgau Kommando Westfrankreich. At this time the German army was in full retreat and all available personnel and weapons were put into service. This Mle displays characteristic German capture/depot rework markings. The numbered bolt head and barrel band bear the last two digits of the gun's serial number. The French did not do this. The forward barrel band has been field repaired with a simple metal strap and two screws.

A fascinating little carbine that displays use in both world wars and by both Allied and Axis forces.

Deactivated with a working action it can be cocked, stripped and dry fired.
