Product Information

An 1885 Pattern British military issued cavalry sword. This sword has been issued several times during its life in military service. The initials "6 DG" are an abbreviation for the 6th Dragoon Guards with the weapon numbers below. Above this is the date stamp "7.1895". These markings were later struck through by the armorer when it was re assigned elsewhere. The blade is also dated stamped 1890, 1893 & 1894. The blade and hand guard are War Department marked (WD) with British broad acceptance stamp. The 6th Dragoon Guards are one of the most famous and long standing British regiments who served throughout the Boer Wars, and First & Second World Wars.

The regiment was first established as the 6th Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1788 and in 1793 was sent to fight French forces in the Low Countries . This was followed by a long period in Ireland from 1796 to 1807 countering French landings and Irish rebellions. From there it sent a detachment of 400 officers and men to South America in 1806.

A rare and original sword with lots of history. The overall condition is very good with no chips to the blade.
